Unit 3 and 4

Why word press?

I’m using word press because it’s easy to use for me it’s simple not hard to get around and anything you post other people around the world can see your work, and if they’re doing the same type of work you’re doing it could help them and they could help you too by leaving comments.

Since I’ve been working on Units 1 and 2, I have found WordPress to be a very easy to use and insert photos and codes into my blog posts.

WordPress is a free and open-source content management system based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. It is most associated with blogging, but supports other types of web content including more traditional mailing lists and forums, media galleries, and online stores.

‘Select and compare a range of communication methods and skills for creative production’

Task 2

Creative Media

Creative Media Production is an exciting and challenging course which encourages you to critically engage with and evaluate a broad range of moving image products. The course is designed to provide an educational foundation for a range of careers in the media industry and allied sectors.

Task 3

I’m thinking of making an app that gives you the main information you need for the business. The business is my dads, he owns his own boat out from Dover and he escorts Swimmers across The English Channel in the summer and in the winter he does fishing trips. (picture of Facebook page below)

LJ FB pic

FACEBOOK

Our target audience mainly come form the Channel Swimming, we get people from all over the world that swim the English Channel with us, we’re more known to the Australian swimmers because we escort loads each year.

The audience is more women then men on our Facebook page (picture below) for the engagement but it’s more men for our followers.

YOUTUBE

We also get a lot of engagement from our YouTube channel, sometimes we record during a Channel Swim and I’d make a short YouTube video and it would get a couple of thousand views, this is good for our Facebook because we linked in our Channel and videos and it would also work both ways, the followers from Facebook would check out the YouTube videos. (YouTube Channel Below)

LJ utube.png

We do the swims in the summer and in the winter we do the fishing trips out from Dover, the audience isn’t as big as the Channel Swimming is but we do get alot of trips each winter. All trips are £45.00 each for individuals or to book the whole boat it is £450.00, no deposit required. (Minimum of 4 people, maximum of 10 people) All prices (including special offers) includes rod, reel and tackle hire (one set per person) Departure times for angling trips are 07:30 – 15:30 or 08:00 – 16:00.

INSTAGRAM

With the fishing trips we sometimes post pictures on Instagram (picture below) we do gets some engagement but all the other social media links are linked up with the Instagram so we would get a small audience from Instagram to other platforms.

instagraminsta

What is our age group?

The youngest you can swim the English channel is at the age of 16, and there’s no age limit to Swim the channel you can swim the channel at the age of 70 if you wanted to but it depends on your medical side, as before you swim the English Channel everyone needs to do a medial test if you fail then you can’t swim but you have you be older then 16.

The youngest you can go out on a fishing trip on a boat is at the age of 14 and again there’s no age limit on fishing trips, you can be as old as you want.

Why’s there an age limit?

The Channel Swimming age limit is now 16 because of the new CSA rules and due to health safety.

Our age limit on our boat for sea fishing trips is 14 or over because we don’t go out that far to fish and its mainly for safety reasons they must wear a life jacket too.

Information On English Channel Swimming

The Channel Swimming Association was founded in 1927 and is internationally recognized to observe and authenticate channel swims.

How far is it to swim the English Channel?

Shortest distance is 21 miles but on either side of Cap Gris Nez, the French Coastline drops away, so if you do not reach land at the Cap you have further to go to make landfall. You will swim across the channel for 21 miles (or more) BUT the current moves you many miles from side to side as the Tide ebbs and flows. Here’s an example of a track (picture below) The weather has the main responsibility for the swim because the weather can’t be too rough because it can mess around with the tide and would be 10times harder to swim and will mess it all up, the better the weather the better the swim.

swim track

The cap is the pointed part just above Audinghen.

Who is the youngest male person to swim the channel?

tomgregory_2

The youngest person, and the youngest male, to swim the English Channel is Thomas Gregory (UK, b. 6 October 1976) who was aged 11 years, 336 days when he swam across in 11 hr 54 min on 6 September 1988. This record is for reference, and cannot be attempted, as there is now a minimum age of 16 years for swimming the English Channel.

Who is the oldest women to swim the English Channel?

gggggg.png

The oldest woman to swim the English Channel is Pat Gallant-Charette (USA, b. 2 February 1951), who’s just aged 66 years, she crossed the English Channel from England to France in 17 hours 55 minutes on 17 June 2017. The record was set under the auspices of the Channel Swimming Association.

Research

I got this information on http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com to do with Thomas Gregory and Pat Gallant-Charette and it has all the world records on there with all the information.

Questions.

For my app I’m going to have our top 5 most asked questions, so this app can give you the information you need, here’s an example I’ve made using Photoshop CC (picture below)

PS example

Here are my questions I’m going to have on the app.

1. how long’s the boat? = 36 ft.
2. how much do you charge for a days fishing trip? = £450.00 for the whole boat or £45 per head.
3. how many people swim the English channel with you? = on average 30-40 every year.
4. how long have you been escorting people across the channel for? = 12 years.

My target is to get the answer to pop up when you click on the question with the mouse.

05/10/2018

I got all my designs up and started to create a code for my app, I got ideas from the code I made for alphabet with words, when you click it changes to different text which is I wanted my app to do.

gggggfrrgrrgo ggibnt4i

This is the code for the alphabet code (picture above) I copied the if and counter codes to get the idea to change text.

Here’s an example of my new code (picture below) that I’ve used the if and counter codes to make the text change.example.png

The App

When you run the code it will come up with a picture of my dads boat and there will be text to guide you on how to work it.

1.png

And when it apears just follow the text, “click to show the questions” – This is what it will look like (picture below) but when you click it once it will only do one at a time.

So this is what it looks like after clicking four times. (picture below)

2.png

Once you’ve got to this stage you have to click in the rectangles to see the answer, if you try clicking out of the rectangle nothing will happen.

This is what the app will look like after you clicked in all of the rectangles, the answers should appear in the correct rectangles (picture below).

ljjjASS.png

And now you got that far all you have to do now is press the space bar to reset the whole thing, and now you will be at the start again (picture below)

1

This app is great for people who want to know a little bit more about the boat and the experience the pilot (my dad) has got and just to get more detail and ideas.

Tutor Comments

Chris went around the class to give feedback on everyone’s work, he checked mine and he identified a few bugs which I need to work on and I need to add a couple of comments in my code so it makes it easier for me and other people, but apart from them few things he said it’s all good.

I went back through the code an added some text to give a little information on the code, so it’s easier to understand the code and might help you to remember more. (pictures below).

  1. what makes a good computer game?
  2. non-computer games throughout history
  3. how old games link to the new
  4. propose a simple game you could make

What makes a good computer game?

For me what makes a good computer game is the game-play and the graphics, the way the game feels when you play it. I like to play games where you need team work and thinking skills/tactics on what to do and not to do and to choose the right path throughout the game, the most important thing in a game of FIFA is scoring.

scoring

The most games I like to play are sport games and action, for sports I enjoy playing FIFA 19 and for the action games I like to play mainly games like Call Of Duty and Fortnite they’re the three games I’m enjoying at the moment.

FIFA 19

FIFA 19 is a football simulation video game 11 vs 11, developed by EA Vancouver and EA Bucharest, as part of Electronic Arts’ FIFA series. Announced on 6 June 2018 for its E3 2018 press conference, it was released on 28 September 2018 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows

FIFA 19 Game Play

The game play that makes FIFA what it is today is the way the players move, pass and shoot, the most key thing that makes me enjoy FIFA game play is that the players move the exact same as the players in real life and the way they play it’s the same style to each player and that makes it a lot more enjoyable.

The first ever FIFA game?

FIFA 94

fifa 94

Known as EA Soccer during development and sometimes subsequently also known as FIFA ’94, the first game in the series was released in the weeks leading up to Christmas 1993.

The game allows up to four players at the same time, each controlling a different footballer. The players can choose to control a footballer on the same team or on opposing teams. The remaining footballers are controlled by the computer.

The FIFA 94 game was playable on Super Nintendo Entertainment System (picture below) The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is a 16-bit home video game console developed by Nintendo that was released in 1990 in Japan and South Korea.

Graphics

What makes the graphics interesting?

The graphics on FIFA now compared to the first ever FIFA game is just amazing, the detail to the whole game is just life like, the stadium, the fans and the most important thing in the FIFA game are the players, the graphics on the players are incredible. (pictures below of first ever FIFA graphics to FIFA 19) The little details to the game makes it enjoyable to play and it makes you feel like your’e in the football world.

These pictures (below) of players one from FIFA 94 and one from FIFA 19, you can see how the graphics has changed since then to now. Back in FIFA 94 the graphics was mostly pixels and today’s graphics are life like and so realistic.

These pictures below are pictures of Tottenham hot spurs new stadium which is still being built (the first picture is the real life version and the second picture is in game of FIFA 19) These little details that make the game better because it’s just like real life.

These pictures show the detail in graphics that they put into this game.

Location

The location I like to play video games is at home in my bedroom, when I play games I like to be left alone and enjoy the games I play.

Other people like to go to the arcades and play their machine and game console with a group around them cheering them on.

All Information below is from google and Wikipedia.

Computer Space sounds like a third-party PC parts wholesaler, but back in 1971 it was the world’s first video game arcade machine. Before Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney went off to start some games company called Atari, was their first commercial collaboration — a full year before Pong.

Character development

FIFA 19

In FIFA 19 there’s a game mode called player career mode, this is where you can create your own player character and play as him which you can also customize, the can customize the kit look, boots, gloves and other more. You play games to upgrade your status to become the best player.

This picture (below is from FIFA 18 not 19 but pretty much the same) you can see a character has been created and you customize him anyway you want. You can name him anything you want, change the date of birth and more.

player career

Picture below shows the stats of the player growing and has improved a lot from the start.

The player career mode makes it really interesting because your’e your own player and you want to play for the best clubs in the world and become the best, it’s like a real life football players journey.

History of non-computer games

Non computer games are games such as board games, games similar to that, any games just not computer/video related.

First ever board game?

Senet, senet was the first ever board game which was found in Predynastic and First Dynasty burials of Egypt, c. 3500 BC and 3100 BC respectively, is the oldest board game known to have existed. Senet was pictured in a fresco found in Merknera’s tomb (3300–2700 BC). Also from predynastic Egypt is Mehen. Backgammon originated in ancient Persia over 5,000 years ago.

How does ‘OLD’ games link to the ‘NEW’ games?

The game play, the old game play always links up with the new games they just improve the game play every year and also the graphics.

Propose a simple game you could make

A simple game  that I could make would be the game ‘PONG’ I used to play this game when I was younger and it was the best game at the time.

I found a PONG code online and I will use that code but I wont copy it all, I will change some of the coding so the code helps me build it.

This is what some of the code looks like. (Picture below)

Untitled

My idea is to try and get a background something to do with football or computer games. I looked for a background but couldn’t find one for the game so I’m going to create my own in Photoshop.

This picture is of the code before i started doing anything to it(Picture below)

before changing code

I had an idea for the background of the game and to have all parts from all old arcade machines and put all of them together and make a background, this is what I’ve created for the background in Photoshop.(Picture below)

photoshop

I got characters from different games and parts of games, as you can see I got pacman, Kong, two street fighter characters, the old pong machine, the old computer space machine and the space invaders. I edited the code and set the picture I made in Photoshop and I’ve set it as the background of the code.(Picture below)

adding backgorund to the code

After running the code there was a couple of problems but they was easy to fix, as you can see in the picture above the bar is a see through green so I turned that into a solid green so you can’t see through it anymore and when you play the game the ball moves too fast so I turned down the speed of the ball in the code.

updated pic of code

I updated the picture for the background for my PONG game and this is what it looks like now. (picture below)

Find out about the lerpColour() function and see if you can write / adapt a program that includes it.

LerpColour() function Calculates a color between two colors at a specific increment. The amt parameter is the amount to interpolate between the two values where 0.0 is equal to the first point, 0.1 is very near the first point, 0.5 is halfway in between, etc.
An amount below 0 will be treated as 0. Likewise, amounts above 1 will be capped at 1. This is different from the behavior of lerp(), but necessary because otherwise numbers outside the range will produce strange and unexpected colors.

Here’s an example of the lerpColour function when running. (picture below also with just an example/easy code for the lerpColour() function code below.)

ggggsd

All of this information was found on https://processing.org/reference/lerpColor_.html if you need help with this if your’e new to lerpColour function like me this site is good for you it teaches you the basic of the function.

Find out why the random() function is an example of a pseudo random number generator.  What does pseudo randomness mean?

The random() function is an example of psuedo random number generator because the random function is fake it don’t choice random numbers its just like the pseudo random number generator the next digit can be predicted.

A pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) is a program written for and used in probability and statistics applications when large quantities of random digits are needed. But the very existence of the algorithm, no matter how sophisticated, means that the next digit can be predicted!

Generative art

Generated by use of computer but there is an element of unpredictablties.

Look through, explore and experiment with the Processing examples – here:  https://processing.org/examples/

I went onto the website and found some codes to do with Objects and I found some codes to do with objects and used the code in processing.

Halloween Special: Contextual Research 31/10/2018

1024px-Jack-o'-Lantern_2003-10-31

Ancient Origins of Halloween

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.

Why is Halloween a thing?

Hansen: The practices of Halloween mostly come from Celtic paganism in the British Isles, and their feast of Samhain, the new year. They believed it was the time when ghosts and spirits came out to haunt, and the Celts would appease the spirits by giving them treats.

What is Halloween?

Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of Hallows’ Even or Hallows’ Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. (This research was found on Wikipedia)

Some people go all the way with costumes and create some amazing things. The picture below is a lady which looks like her face has been torn off her face, it’s all done with makeup and a lot of talent.

Whats the difference between Europe and American Halloween?

Europe

Every October 31, both children and adults slip into the night as ghouls and goblins, princesses and pirates. Many Americans celebrate the traditions of Halloween by dressing in costumes and telling tales of witches and ghosts. Pumpkins are carved into glowering jack-o’-lanterns. Children parade from house to house, knocking on doors and calling out “Trick or treat!” hoping to have their bags filled with candy. It can be a night of fun for those who participate, but the history of Halloween in America has a darker side.

American

Halloween is all based around entertainment people dress up  and there’s normally events going on around the world to do with Halloween like scary mazes, Halloween parties and lots more. People get together and take their kids out all dressed up and knock on peoples doors and they get sweets and sometimes money.

  • Thriller, thriller is to do with horror movies ‘scary films’ they’re mostly to do with clowns or people getting killed here’s and example of a Thriller I found on google. (picture below)Related imageHere is information about the film and what’s based around. Seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, are about to face their worst nightmare — an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town’s children. Banding together over the course of one horrifying summer, the friends must overcome their own personal fears to battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise. (This information was found on google)

Why are pumpkins in the Halloween history?

Carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns is a popular Halloween tradition that originated hundreds of years ago in Ireland. Back then, however, jack-o’-lanterns were made out of turnips or potatoes; it wasn’t until Irish immigrants arrived in America and discovered the pumpkin that a new Halloween ritual was born.

The British used to use turnips instead of pumpkins until they went over to america and found out pumpkins were a thing and now we all use them. (turnip pumpkin picture below)

I’ve come up with with an idea to make a poster to do with Halloween and the history of it. The software to make this I will be using Photoshop.

My design is based around the 17th century paper cut out (picture below), the idea is to have a picture but just with solid colours but a strong picture.

dddd.png

The picture below is my idea/design so far, I’ve based it around a haunted Halloween theme and I’ve added the old pumpkins in which are turnips and the new pumpkins. The idea is to have people going trick or treating but in a history way.

sfefef

I had a little talk with matt and he said why not do a story to the picture like the paper cut out (picture above)

Timeline of paper cutting

Who invented paper cutting?

Cai Lun
The art of paper-cutting (jiǎnzhǐ 剪纸) in China may date back to the second century a.c., since paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. As paper became more affordable, paper-cutting became one of the most important types of Chinese folk art.
The picture below is the one I can find furthest back in time.

Paper cutting or Scherenschnitte (literally, scissor cuts) started in Switzerland around the 16th century.

16th Century

Scherenschnitte which means “scissor cuts” in German is the art form of paper cutting. The artwork often has symmetry within the design. This art tradition was found in Switzerland and Germany in the 16th century.

19th Century

Scherenschnitte really took off in Switzerland in the 19th century, under the two masters of the art – Johann Jakob Hauswirth (1809-1871) and Louis Saugy (1871-1953). Most houses, restaurants, shops and hotels in Gstaad-Saanenland area display paper cut designs.

I will working on the 17th century paper cutting.

17th century, the two main paper cutting artists was Joanna Koerten and Adele Schopenhauer.

Joanna Koerten, (married name Joanna Block) (17 November 1650 in Amsterdam – 28 December 1715 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch artist who excelled in painting, drawing, embroidery, glass etching, and wax modeling. She achieved fame as a silhouette cutter, the art of creating outline images from pieces of cut paper mounted on a contrasting background. She produced landscapes, seascapes, flowers, portraits, and religious scenes in this medium. Her clients included Peter the Great of Russia, Frederick Elector of Brandenburg, Johan de Witt and William III of England.

Luise Adelaide Lavinia Schopenhauer, known as Adele Schopenhauer (12 July 1797 – 25 August 1849), was a German author. She was the sister of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and daughter of author Johanna Schopenhauer. Henriette Sommer and Adrian van der Venne were pseudonyms used by her. She was highly gifted and engaged in literature and poetry. She not only wrote fairy tales, poems, and novels, but was also a talented papercut artist.

After all this research and having the idea to make a picture, I decided to start the picture all over again, (old picture is above near the top) my idea was to get paper cutting pictures from different centuries and make them all into one picture, after editing it all in Photoshop this is what I’ve made (picture below) And also In the picture I’ve hidden century numbers.
