VR Assignment

Create something visual in, or for, VR. For example, you could create a VR world (like Joseph did) or you could create a 3D asset in blender etc, which could be imported into a VR game. Or, you could create a 2D menu for a VR game (maybe with 3D effects, such as shadows, bevels etc) taking into consideration the context of the game and choosing suitable colours, font styles, textures etc. Once you’ve made it, evaluate it.

I’ve played on the Oculus Rift and also the Oculus Go.

Oculus Rift

My experience on the VR is brilliant, I’ve the Oculus Rift at home and use it, it’s easy to setup and takes about 15-20minutes max. (I’ll leave a video below of full setup)

How to set up Oculus Rift:

In the setup you go around the moving area that you’ve with the controller and the VR sensors pick it up and draw it in the system, if you play a game and you get near the edge of your area blue lines appear and you can see your area, it’s brilliant because you can see where you can and can’t go so you don’t bump into anything or even knock something over.

Below there are pictures of the Oculus Rift, it shows you the sensors (you can have more then 3 for better game experience) the Head Set , controller (you have 2) and also my PC.

To run the Oculus Rift you need certain requirements.

  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater.
  • NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 or greater.
  • 8GB RAM or more.
  • HDMI 1.3 and 3x USB 3.0 plus 1x USB 2.0.
  • Windows 7 64 bit or greater.

Oculus Go

After playing on the Oculus Go I didn’t think it was that great, the controller in the headset was out of place, the controller didn’t lineup with your hand, it was out of place.

I played a game on the Go called “Shooting Showdown 2” The down side to the game is that you have to use your head to aim and reload, where the controller only let you shoot. I prefer a VR shooting game where you use the controllers to aim, reload and shoot.

I found out that the battery life isn’t that great it only lasts about 1.5 – 2hours and it dies pretty quickly, it also takes 3 hours to charge, you’re not even getting more game time then charging time.

Also the menu is just plan and simple, it feels and looks boring and not much to do where as on the Ouclus rift you got a little home area where you can chill, spawn items and other feels and just mess around. The Go needs that little extra.

The price of the Oculus Go is around £150.

I’m going to create a 3D VR world in Unity, in this world I’m going to make objects to be able to be picked up and thrown. Also add a weapon into it, to maybe shoot the objects and maybe add a physics door where you can use your hands in VR to open it.

I’ve found tutorials on YouTube to help me with this all and to make this happen. Below are the links in order that I’ve been following and I’ll also leave screenshots of my Unity to show the progress.

1adding gun

Below I’ll leave a video of my progress of my VR world created in Unity. In this video I show everything I’ve done so far, to grabbing cubes, throwing them and using a gun.

I next started to add a physics door, where you can open and close it use your hands in VR. Below is a picture of where I’ve got so far and I’ll also leave a video link below to the tutorial.

Updated video.

In the video above I’ve updated the world and I removed the door for now as I’m having problems.

I have now added a crowbar which you can pick up but when I do pick it up I go flying into the air. There’s a glitch and it’s fixable, which will be fixed along the way.

I’ve also added a shooting range, the shooting range has three aisles with each having a pistol to shoot with. With the guns, the bullets when fired were too big and I’ve now resized them down to more reasonable size which you can see within the video (above).

BONEWORKS VR

BONEWORKS Is a narrative VR action adventure using advanced experimental physics mechanics. Dynamically navigate through environments, engage in physics heavy combat, and creatively approach puzzles with physics.

I got this game to play and have fun and also to give me ideas my my VR world because I’m kinda working with physics and boneworks is all about physics. The game is so realistic and life like, you can pick anything up and hold/touch it like you would in real life and also you can climb pretty much anything too. The movement and also hand movement is so life like, the way you hold weapons, guns, knifes, baseball bats and more.

Below I’ll leave a video that shows you game play of Boneworks and also talks about everything you need to know.

Update

In the update I’ve tweaked with the gravity settings for the gun bullets, when I fire the gun the bullets would just float in the air and I’ve made the bullets fall straight to the ground like they would in real life. (16 seconds into video)

I’ve added a target in the world and when you shoot it the target would just wobble back and forward. (45 seconds into video)
