Exhibit Opening Day

07/12/2018

Identify and describe the target audience for an open day exhibit.

My target audience will be from age 16 to 25 years old because the most age group at college is between 16-20, so I chosen the age 16 to 25 because the course isn’t just for young people like myself. Most of 16-25 year olds are all into gaming or anything to do with computers, I want to create an simple game that others can and want to do the same. The down side to this course that there are more male then female and Chris wants to attract more females so it’s more of equal and to let people know that the course is not just for males. I also want to keep my game plain and simple with the 2D graphics and also with the game-play.

Primary research.

I want to create a basic game that 16 -25 year olds can just understand and know how it works without taking along time to understand the game.

We all had taken part in a survey on about the exhibit and here are the results (screen shots below).

Picture 1 – What is the correct target audience for the exhibition we are making?

As you see in the picture the audience is mainly between 16-19 year olds which is idle because most of the 16-19 year olds are all into gaming or anything to do with computer based.

Picture 3 – Are artistic features important in an exhibition piece?

In the survey result it shows more people had chosen yes and some people had chosen ‘Maybe’ and ‘Don’t Know’ – I think it is important in an exhibition because you can show what you can create while taking the course , it shows what skills you can get from it.

Picture 4 – Which is the correct website that we use to showcase out work?

Everyone that had taken the survey had chosen word-press which they’re 100% correct because Word-Press is a free site to use and you can store all your blogs onto the site on your own account, and also you can share it with anyone. It’s also good for your future if you get a job interview and its based around your work on your blogs it can show them what you can do.

Picture 5 – If you were to visit the college open day exhibition, which sort of work would you like to see on display there?

On the survey most of the people had chosen ‘A game created in Unity’ and ‘A program made in processing’. These two choices are the best to have when at the exhibition because it can show what type of creations you can make, not just on unity but also on processing. You can see on Unity that you can create 2D and 3D games and on processing you can create similar things to 2D games, you can create shapes/patterns and you can code shapes to do certain things.

Picture 6 – What is your age?

Most of the age group from the survey is 16 or 17 and also some over the age of 19. I think this is about right because people would join college after they’ve left school or people like me which is over the age of 19 would like to do something different in their life.

Picture 8 – Would you rather see something interactive or would you like to read about information?

Mainly ‘see something interactive’ was chosen which I agree on because it catches their eye and they get draw to it and make them re think that they can create that themselves.

Are graphics important in a video game?

I done a little survey asking ‘are graphics important in a video game?’ below I’ll leave a word press blog link to the survey and on there it will show you the questions and the results.

My survey

Here’s a picture of my game so you can understand the questions more in the survey above.

added paper icons

Secondary research.

I went online and got reviews from 2D Mario games because my game is based around the idea of Mario kart and I went onto Amazon reviews and got some screen shots of the total reviews and some good and a couple of okay reviews, I’ll leave a slide show of reviews below.

Most people enjoy the Mario Kart games and would recommend it to other people for there kids.

I done more research online and searched why do we still love Mario Kart and below are the results.

Why do we still love Mario Kart?

It’s  great pick me up

The colorful dazzle of Mario Kart’s stages is an instant pick-me-up thanks to how they run the gamut of family-friendly design with sun-drenched beaches, picturesque fields of a lush green and more. Exceedingly jolly, they – and the characterful racers who drive around them – act as a plaster to any bad mood. It helps that the courses usually pack creativity as a string to their bow. Ranging from bouncing mushrooms, water-slides and the anti-gravity loops of Mario Kart 8, this is a series that works hard to be remembered.

It makes everyone a racer

While blue-shells earn plenty of flak on the web, I believe that one of the best things about the recent Mario Kart games is how almost anyone of any skill-level can get involved. It’s one of the few racers where newcomers won’t feel as if they’ve got an insurmountable task ahead to keep up.

Skill still matters

Complaints that skill isn’t a factor in Mario Kart are common, yet I wouldn’t say that’s true. If you take the time to learn each track, racer and vehicle, no amount of ego-destroying weapons can keep you out of the top spots for long. Almost everyone knows a player who always aces each track no matter their bad luck, all while controlling the most awkward of karts nobody else seems able to use. Despite being deeply accessible, this is a franchise where dedication doesn’t go unrewarded.

Pitch your ideas to a client (Chris or Jez)

I’ve created a Power point slide show and it’s now all ready to show Chris.

I’ll leave an attachment for the power point Below.

Design and develop your exhibition piece.

I’m creating an simple and plain game with simple 2D graphics, you can find my word-press blog below and you can see my progress on my 2D game and how I create it.

https://adams2.home.blog/2018/11/07/creating-a-2d-game/

The word-press blog has everything you need to know about my 2D game and the character that’s involved.

Throughout the design / development process, reflect on what you like and dislike how it meets the need of target audience.

At the start of creating my game I didn’t think it would go all together very well and would just be a boring game. Throughout making the game I’ve gained new skills to understand more about my audience and I’ve now gained more knowledge about what I like and dislike on the game.Making a survey for my friends to do and give me feedback helped me out a lot, because it didn’t just help me it made me understand more about my audience and the game it self. They gave me more ideas to put into the game too so I could improve it, I will leave the questions I did ask and their answers too (below)

My Survey

Would you rather see the game keep going along or just go to new scene when completing the level?

Answers

  1. Go to a new level.
  2. Go to the next level when completing the first one.
  3. When completing a level go to a new scene.
  4. Go to the next level.

After reading the feedback I will make the next level go to a new level, not just go along the game.

Would u see other colours?

Answers

  1. No the colours are fine, it all goes with it.
  2. Add different colours as you get higher in levels.
  3. Yes.
  4. Be good to see other colours.

After going through the feedback comments I decided to not add any other colours into the game, because my theme is based around 2 main colours, I might add different colours in higher levels.

Would you want to see a stat counter?

Answers

  1. Yes .
  2. Yes.
  3. Yes it would be good to see how much paper we collect at the end.
  4. Yes .

After reading the feedback I’ve now added a counter into my game, and every paper icon you collect it goes up by 1.

Do you want to see more platforms?

 Answers

  1. Add more platforms as you go higher in levels.
  2. Yes more would be better.
  3. Yes add more at every level.
  4. There’s enough platforms for the first level but maybe add more the further you go.

After getting the feedback about my platforms I’ve decided not to add any more because I think there’s enough and if I do make more levels I’ll add more platforms in then.

What I like about my game?

I like where you got to collect as many paper icons as you can while being timed and you can beat other peoples score. In the game you have a timer so this will make the game more competitive which my target audience will enjoy. Also, the game will have a score after the game has ended so this makes it engaging for people to beat each others scores. I think the paper icons work well with in the game because of my theme which is based from (paper cut-outs) Ans also, the target audience will recognize the icons as bits of paper.

What I dislike about my game?

The only thing I dislike about my game is the platforms, I don’t think that they’re that great and could have better platforms for it. They don’t look like game platforms they can do with more time in Photoshop to be more edited, they look a bit too rushed and can do with some time on them.

Evaluate the ‘piece’ you made (through self-evaluation and feedback from others- especially target audience).

My own feedback (Adam)

In my opinion after playing the game I created I think it’s a decent game, could have more to it and more features but overall I like it, its easy to control, easy to understand what to do to complete it.

Chris feedback.

Below is a YouTube link where Chris recorded his feedback of my game after playing it and uploaded it to YouTube you can listen to his review/feedback below.
